Healthy and vibrant retail activity is the key to making urban places prosperous, attractive and safe. The strategies around planning retail high streets and their public realm need to be informed by modern retail economics in order for these shopping districts to remain viable, competitive and attractive. Understanding the needs and requirements of retailers aids in creating an environment that will attract the type and mix of retailers needed to create an active, safe, day/evening place.

This brief study outlines the key best-practice principles, relating to access and arrival, retail mix and organization, building and streetscape design, that have informed the design of successful retail high street precedents. It also suggests how these principles could be applied to Robson Street to enhance the pedestrian experience, maintain a diverse retail offer, and ensure day/evening activity.
