Al Gharbia is the 60,000 square kilometre western region of AbuDhabi Emirate that includes a 300 km long coastal environment and a vast interior desert landscape. It is the largest and least populated region comprising of seven settlements. Most of the UAE’s oil and gas reserves are located in the region so it is strategically and economically important and is expected to see future economic and population growth pressures. CIVITAS Studio was the lead planning firm on a team of international experts commissioned to create a 20 year growth plan to evaluate and respond to future development needs by balancing resource needs with environmental preservation and community liveability.
The planning work included:
- Planning charrettes and workshops with key stakeholders and officials which guided the planning process;
- Economic and demographic analysis to understand both the lifestyle and economic factors driving regional demands, and to determine the population and key employment services for each town;
- Environmental analyses to understand the ecological assets of the region;
- Archaeological summaries to gain a sense of the cultural riches of the region; and,
- Concept growth plans for the 7 settlements in the region.
